Nusa Lembongan:
Our Favorite Spot in Bali
If there’s one place that has managed to preserve its authenticity and laid-back vibe, it’s Nusa Lembongan. Every time I visit, I rediscover its unique atmosphere—idyllic beaches, friendly locals, and a peaceful pace of life. For those wanting to explore Nusa Penida, just 15 minutes away by boat, a day trip is easy before returning to the calmer, more authentic setting of Lembongan.

How to Get There?
To get to Nusa Lembongan, several fast boat companies operate daily crossings from Sanur, a district in Denpasar located about 30 minutes by car from Ngurah Rai International Airport. The ride usually takes between 30 and 45 minutes, depending on the company, and boats may arrive at different spots on the island.
Personally, I usually go with Rocky Fast Cruise — a reliable option that offers several departures a day. One-way tickets typically cost between €10 and €15 per person, depending on the time and season.
You can also reach Nusa Lembongan from Nusa Penida (about a 15-minute ride on a local boat), or even from nearby islands like Lombok or the Gili Islands, thanks to private companies that offer boat connections, often with a stopover in Bali. And if you’re already on Nusa Ceningan, you just need to cross the iconic Yellow Bridge — either on foot or by scooter — to get to Nusa Lembongan.

How to Get Around?
Nusa Lembongan is a small, easy-to-navigate island, and renting a scooter is definitely the most convenient way to explore it freely and at your own pace. I usually book mine through Rocky Fast Cruise as soon as I get off the boat — it’s around 80,000 IDR per day. If needed, you can also contact the woman who manages the rentals directly on WhatsApp: +62 812 3682 5288. With a scooter, you can also cross the iconic Yellow Bridge to reach Nusa Ceningan, the small neighboring island.
If you're not comfortable driving, there are also local taxis or buggies available — both are common on the island. And if you're staying near the beach or the main areas, walking is totally doable since distances are pretty short.
Finally, if you’re planning to continue your trip, boats regularly depart to Nusa Penida, the Gili Islands, or even Lombok.
What to Do?
When it comes to surfing, Nusa Lembongan is a true little paradise for wave lovers. The island is home to several well-known spots like Playgrounds, Lacerations, and Shipwrecks — perfect for experienced surfers. Beginners can give it a try too if the conditions are right, but be mindful of the reef, which can be tricky just below the surface. These spots are accessible by boat for around 100,000 IDR round-trip, so you can get straight to the waves without paddling too far from the beach.
Another popular surf spot is at the tip of Nusa Ceningan, just across the Yellow Bridge. Even if you’re not surfing, it’s worth the visit — grab a seat at Mahana Point Warung & Bar, perched right above the water. The view over the surfers is wide open, and the sunsets from there are stunning — best enjoyed with a fresh juice or a cold Bintang. The vibe is super relaxed and laid-back, a perfect way to end the day.
If you prefer exploring the underwater world, scuba diving is another must-do activity in Lembongan. Many dive centers offer excursions, but my personal favorite is Sober Diving, a professional and reliable team. They also have a large swimming pool, perfect for those taking certification courses or looking to refresh their skills before heading out to sea.
Most dives take place around Nusa Penida or in the Lembongan mangrove, where you can explore breathtaking marine landscapes. A half-day trip with two dives, including lunch, costs around €85. There is a small extra charge for Manta Point, as it is further away. Manta Point, located off Nusa Penida, is a popular site to see manta rays, although it has fewer fish and corals compared to other spots. On the other hand, dive sites to the west and north of the island are perfect for admiring a wide variety of corals and tropical fish.
Additionally, depending on the season (July to October), you may even get the chance to see the famous mola mola (ocean sunfish)—an impressive deep-sea creature that occasionally appears in the waters around Nusa Penida. Unfortunately, I haven't been lucky enough to spot one during my dives, but for those who do, it’s truly an unforgettable experience!
The Laid-Back Charm of Lembongan
But Lembongan is not just about adventure—it’s also an island where life moves at a relaxed pace. Stunning beaches like Dream Beach and Mushroom Bay are perfect for unwinding after a day of exploration. The island’s beach bars offer the ideal setting to sip on a cocktail or fresh juice while enjoying a breathtaking sunset with your feet in the sand.
The main street is lined with authentic warungs and Western-style restaurants, ensuring a great variety of options to satisfy every craving.
For ultimate relaxation, Lembongan has plenty of massage salons. Most offer traditional one-hour massages for around 150,000 IDR (€9)—a perfect way to unwind after an eventful day.
One of my favorite scenic walks leads to Song Lambung Beach. The path runs along the waterfront, passing a selection of charming cafés and restaurants with breathtaking views of the ocean and Mount Agung on clear days. If you want to extend your walk, take the steps behind the warung at Song Lambung Beach. A short walk through lush vegetation will bring you to Tamarind Beach, a hidden gem worth discovering.
How Long to Stay?
If you're short on time, a 3-day stay is enough to explore the main sights of Lembongan and Ceningan, relax on the beach, and enjoy activities like diving or surfing. However, you can easily stay longer—I’ve even spent 10 days on the island, as it’s a perfect place for remote work while soaking in the tranquility and beauty of the surroundings.
Where to Stay?
Both islands offer a wide range of accommodations, from budget-friendly options to more luxurious establishments, depending on your preferences and budget. Lembongan is perfect for its proximity to restaurants, cafés, and activities, offering a livelier atmosphere. Ceningan, on the other hand, is more peaceful and secluded, yet still just a 10-minute ride from the amenities of Lembongan.
Personally, I really enjoyed staying at Bukit Permata, perched on the heights of Nusa Lembongan. This peaceful little haven, slightly removed from the busier parts of the island, offers charming bungalows with an open view of the sea. The infinity pool is the perfect spot to unwind after a day of exploring. The place is calm and intimate, and the warm welcome makes the experience even more enjoyable. It’s a lovely option for anyone looking to enjoy the island’s tranquility while staying somewhere well-kept and affordable.
Our Favorite Spots
In Lembongan:
• Dapuk Kecil Lembongan: If you love tasting local food in a simple and authentic setting, don’t miss this small warung on the main road. The concept is straightforward: you choose from a selection of homemade dishes displayed in a showcase — stir-fried vegetables, crispy tempeh, curry, spicy eggs, grilled fish... You build your plate according to your preferences, and the price is based on what you pick. Generally, a full meal will cost between 25,000 and 40,000 IDR (around €1.50 to €2.50), making it a very affordable option. The food is always fresh, flavorful, and served with a smile. A real gem for eating local without breaking the bank.
• Little Prema Warung: My favorite spot for a delicious fish and seafood barbecue. During the day, they offer a small menu with simple, tasty dishes, but it’s in the evening that the place comes alive with a barbecue set up at the entrance. You choose your fish or seafood directly from the display — tuna, mahi-mahi, shrimp, squid — and it’s grilled to order, served with vegetables, rice, and homemade sauces. Expect to pay between 70,000 and 120,000 IDR for a full meal, depending on what you choose. The vibe is warm, relaxed, and local — perfect for a laid-back dinner with family or friends.
• Cookies Coffee Shop & Warung: A great spot to enjoy delicious food in a very pleasant setting. The staff is lovely, and the atmosphere is very friendly. With wifi and outlets available, it’s also a great choice for those who want to work while enjoying good food.
• TS Spa and Massage: A unique massage salon in a small wooden cabin shaped like a boat. One of the best massages we’ve had, for only 145,000 IDR (about €9). A completely relaxing experience in a peaceful setting.
In Ceningan:
• Sunny Street Café: The perfect spot for a laid-back meal. Not only are the owners lovely, but the food quality is also top-notch. They offer a variety of delicious dishes at very affordable prices. It’s ideal for breakfast, lunch, or dinner while enjoying a friendly and calm atmosphere with an ocean view.
• Mahana Point Warung & Bar: A popular spot to watch surfers in action while enjoying the breathtaking ocean view. This warung, perched above the water, is the perfect place to sip a fresh fruit juice or a cold Bintang while admiring the waves. The atmosphere is relaxed, and the setting is perfect for unwinding, with the added bonus of stunning sunsets you shouldn’t miss.
• Arna Complex: A slightly more upscale experience with its glamping-style bungalows, ideal for those seeking a unique stay with comfort in a natural setting. While we didn’t stay here, we enjoyed the spectacular ocean view while sipping a cocktail at sunset. The atmosphere is chic and laid-back, with an infinity pool accessible to visitors. This luxurious little haven offers a privileged setting to enjoy a pleasant time, while being away from the hustle and bustle. It’s a great option for a relaxing getaway without needing to stay overnight. Perfect for a touch of luxury without breaking the bank!
• My Beach Warung & Bar: With an amazing view of the water, a refreshing pool, and a laid-back vibe, this warung offers excellent food, friendly service, and the perfect setting to relax. The wifi and outlets available also make it a great spot for those wanting to work while enjoying the view!
Nusa Lembongan, A Must-Visit in Bali
In summary, Nusa Lembongan is a true gem to discover off the coast of Bali, perfect for combining adventure, relaxation, and culinary discoveries. Compared to its neighboring island, Nusa Penida, Lembongan is smaller and can be explored relatively quickly. However, this is exactly what gives it its charm: it has managed to retain an authenticity and calmness that make it beautiful. While Nusa Penida is becoming increasingly touristy, Lembongan has preserved its natural and laid-back atmosphere, which makes it a true haven of peace. It’s important to note that while the island is already popular, it still holds an authentic side that we hope will remain before it is influenced by the changes affecting its neighbors.
Whether you're a passionate surfer, diving enthusiast, or simply in search of breathtaking landscapes, Lembongan will captivate you. Its paradisiacal beaches, diverse activities, and tranquil vibe make it a must-visit destination. So, are you ready to embark on this adventure?
